short term memory loss

So it's time. I have some stuff to work out, so I'm blogging. My therapy. Let's see, first off, Jacob is doing soooo much better in 4th grade. I was finally able to get to the root of his stress. I met with each of his teachers one on one and got some helpful info. Apparently, there are 2 other boys that Jacob spends a good part of the day with that have behavior problems. So, they are getting redirected a lot. I know Jacob well enough to know that he would totally internalized that, even if it wasn't directed at him. Especially if it's happening all the time. I passed on this info and things are tons better. I also told all of his teachers that at the end of the day, Jacob may only go so far academically. And that's ok. If he never learns certain math concepts, then so be it. I want him to reach his full potential, but stressing him out in order to do so, is not ok. If he is stressed out and unhappy, then it's just not worth it. That child has had enough to deal with in his short life and will only continue to have struggles, so making him a basket case in 4th grade is just not going to work for me. They all agreed. I think everybody felt a sense of relief that we were all on the same page. So many parents in my generation expect sooo much out of their children and definitely their children's teachers/schools. Too much in my opinion, but that topic could be a whole other blog for me. I think letting the teachers know that Jacob's happiness is my #1priority got everyone on the right track. Jacob is back to where he used to be when it came to school. Homework is a struggle, but getting better. He gladly goes to school and I don't hear anything from him about not wanting to go, so I couldn't be happier.
Something that has been bothering me though, is if/when I need to say something to someone in our lives about "getting" Jacob. I know I talked about that in my last blog, but I have had a few things happen that make me wonder how to handle someone you see on a regular basis, continually not understanding. Jacob is different, he has some very odd behaviors sometimes. Some I work on with him, some we just have to ignore. Other people not ignoring it and feeling the need to say something is what I don't appreciate. Let me be honest, I take issue with other people attempting to discipline my kids unnecessarily. I just don't think you get on to someone else's kid unless you absolutely have to. That's called stepping on toes. I work really hard with my kids and try to make them the best behaved kiddos I can. I know I'm biased, but I think they are great kids. They still do little boy things, but that is expected. Kids are kids, and I love them for it. Sometimes I prefer hanging with kids over adults. I completely enjoy their sweet view of the world, and how they react to it. So when other people, who quite honestly I don't think "get" kids at all, feel the need to say something.... well, I want to slap them. I am, and always have been, a child advocate. I truly believe that children are my passion. So when some knucklehead feels the need to spout their opinion or intervene on a situation, it just plain makes me crazy. I guess I'm just very sensitive on this issue. Can't you tell?
Ok, so got that out. Moving on.

We moved Ryan to a different school. He was just really struggling at the Spanish school, poor baby. Brett and I realized at his Christmas program, when little blonde haired blue eyed girls were up on stage rattling off in Spanish, that we had just thrown Ryan to the wolves. We do wish we would have started him earlier, I think he would have been just fine. He is very happy at his new school. Although today he told me when I asked him what he learned, "you need to stop asking me that." When I asked why, he replied, "because I have short term memory loss."

Luke is getting straight A's and looking forward to baseball starting up again. He loves 2nd grade and his sweet-as-pie teacher, and is starting not to mind being chased by that cute girl at the skating rink. ;-)

Ok, I have plenty of tax stuff to be working on, so I'll stop there.
