So it's happened again. Another wonderful ARD for Jacob. I went into this one a bit more apprehensive than usual, because we were talking about next year, 5th Grade. In our district, that's Intermediate school. Switching classes, lockers, hauling books around, etc. There were 9 people in this meeting, all there for one goal, Jacob's success. As usual, they went above and beyond and I don't have to worry so much. The Content Mastery teacher he will have next year was there, so we were all able to give her everything she needed to know about him. I found out he will have 4 different teachers, two Spec Ed- for Lang Arts and Math, and two Reg Ed- for Science and Social Studies. The OT has put him on observation only, for now. He is doing everything he needs to do physically to succeed, well enough for her to decide not to pull him out of class. If something comes up, we can start that again, but for now, the OT will just check up on him. Awesome, more growth from Jacob.
We agreed that he would get a set of books for school and a set for home, so he doesn't have to lug them back and forth. We are going to see what he needs to help him with his locker, if anything, and go from there. He will take a tour with the whole 4th Grade of his new school, but then his Spec Ed LA teacher will take his students on another tour, just them. The Content Mastery teacher said she takes them around on a quiter tour and talks to each one of them. She agreed to pull him out of the building before fire drills (she has some other students they do that for) because he hates the loud noise. We gave her names of some of the boys he has been with for 2-3 years already that look out for him, so she can put some in class with him from the beginning. That way he has familiarity right away. We discussed the STARR, (the crazy state test this year, yuck) and what he needed to be successful at that. His Spec Ed LA and Math teachers (both absolutely amazing) made sure to get things in order so that he takes the test we think he needs to take to be successful. He has a new AlphaSmart, called a NEO, that he loves. I guess it does a few more things than the previous one, I need to play with it myself and check it out. And so on. I've said it before, I count my lucky stars that we are able to have him where he is and that he has such an amazing, supportive "village".
Luke has started the baseball season and loves it. They won their first game, and got a few good hits. He has some good friends on the team this season, so he's really happy. After the season's over, we're going to look into Karate and Guitar lessons for him. I think he'd rock at guitar, pun intended. He also got straight A's again, and is reading up a storm. I have him reading the "Magic Tree House" series to us, and he's on book 4 or 5 I believe. Love to hear that sweet voice. :-)
Ryan started soccer and baseball and loves both equally. We are looking forward to checking out Kindergarten and he can't wait to be at "Luke and Jacob's school".
Not sure I ever mentioned him before, but at the beginning of the last season of soccer, Luke caught a frog in the pond at the soccer fields. He brought him home and they named him "Jumper". We got out an old aquarium, and he put rocks, plants, a warmer, etc. in the tank and that dang frog lived in thier room until last month. I kid you not, Luke fed it dog food. So, since the passing of dear Jumper, Luke has been looking forward to soccer starting up again so he could catch another frog. At the first game, he and Nana went on a frog hunt. He came back with a little box. I asked what he caught and he said a "tadpole". But when he opened the box, I freaked. I was expecting this little squiggly thing, but this thing was huge. It looked more like a dinosaur tadpole. I guess it's about to start growing legs and become a frog. One of the dads said it was actually a polywog. Luke named it Tad, like tad-pole. Mom named it Thaddeous Polywog Leedy. He has lived in their room for a week and a half now....
