garage Secret Service

I can't believe this, but Jacob has decided that he enjoys... wait for it.... Yoga! He tried it for the first time at Club Metro last week. Each session of CM I print out the schedule and he puts in on the fridge, then he checks every week to see what they are doing and lets me know if he wants to go or not. He didn't want to go out to eat one week, but he did want to do yoga another. He told me that it said "relaxing music" and since this is something definitely up his alley, he wanted to try it. I asked if he knew what it was, he said no, so I explained that it was lots of bending your body and stretching, but that it was also very relaxing. So when I showed up to pick him up a few minutes early, I slipped into the back of the room to check it out. Of course the room was quiet, and relaxing music was playing. All of the participants were laying on their mats (yes, Jacob took my yoga mat with him and was laying on it), and the instructor was quietly talking and breathing and at one point she rang her triangle. I could see Jacob laying on his back, and every so often he would pick his head up and look, I guess waiting to see when it would be done. Once they turned on the lights and he got up and came to me, he looked so relaxed and groggy! It  was great, and in the car he said he liked it and when I asked if he wanted to try it again he said yes. I told him I could look into it and he could maybe even go once a week, which sounded good to him. So I've gotten the instructor's info and emailed her, stay tuned..... So super excited about this for him though! I have also been wanting to get him back horse back riding, but haven't managed to make that happen yet. (Update on the yoga since I started writing this post: the instructor is between studios so she has nowhere to hold classes. :-( The lady in charge of CM said she received a lot of positive feedback, so she plans to incorporate yoga again. I do plan to check in with that instructor at a later date to see where she lands...so that's a bummer, but maybe I can find another instructor that 'gets it'.)
We have also had to make a circle chart with the different 'layers' of relationships in our life. He is always asking if random people can come over; whether it's the bus driver (Miss Deanie), or teachers he has or that I work with, or even Adam Sandler and Barack Obama. He has actually decided that the whole Obama family can come live with us. Brett & I would just have to give up our room to Barack and Michelle, and Sasha and Malia can have the guest room. Brett then gets the top bunk in Luke & Ryan's room, and I get the trundle in Jacob's room. Oh, and just in case you are wondering about where we would put the Secret Service, they all get to share the bedroom out in the garage. Lucky guys. So anyway, one of Jacob's awesome teachers suggested that we take a piece of paper, draw a circle, and write in it the closest people to us. Like grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. Then draw an outer circle to include the next step out, like close friends that may come over more often or even stay the night for some reason. The next circle out is people like the bus driver, Ryan's soccer coach (his name is AD, but Jacob calls him "HD"), and any of Jacob's current or previous teachers as well as anybody that I work with. The final outside circle would be all the famous people that we don't actually know; like Adam and Barack, as well as Macaulay Culkin, Jack Black, and Aileen Quinn (she was the little actress that played Annie in the original 80s movie, for some reason Jacob has taken a serious interest in her). I think he may have a few more that he wants to add, but I have to admit that having that chart as a reference has allowed me to group the people in our lives according to closeness..... wanna know where you land?? ;-)

Luke gets to play on the Dallas Cowboys golf course and I'm super jealous.... or as the 5th graders say, "totes jelly".......

Ryan has really started to surprise (and please) me by starting to put himself out there and try to make new friends. I emailed his teacher about his lack of confidence, and she just adores him, so she was going to do what she can as far as seating arrangements, etc. He has also been really trying to interact with the boys on his baseball team. In the past, even in a sports/team atmosphere, Ryan would typically keep to himself. The other night the team went out to eat after a canceled game and Ryan sat with his team (instead of us like he usually does), and played in the arcade with his team. It was so nice to see him making an effort to be sociable. I told him that I see children who want to be his friend all of the time, and he seemed surprised by that. I think the sweet thing didn't recognize what that looked like. I'm just so hopeful that he can get a better handle on this social thing before he hits the older, more socially involved grades. Watching these 5th graders..... holy moses....
